CR7 END OF AN ERA

The confirmation

Ronaldo, now 41, has said 2026 will be his final World Cup. After Portugal's 0-1 loss to Spain in the Round of 16 in Dallas, he called it the end of his World Cup journey. His quote: "I want to enjoy it as much as possible, because it will be my last World Cup."

He also said he plans to retire from pro football entirely in "one or two years" and wants to prioritize family time after that.

Why now

Age + mileage: 6 World Cups, 5 Champions Leagues, 1000+ pro games. His body and schedule have been non-stop since 2002.

Goals left: He's chasing 1000 career goals. As of 2026 he's sitting around 920-930 club + country. Al-Nassr in Saudi gives him the platform + less intensity to chase it.

Legacy secured: 5 Ballon d'Ors, 146 international goals (all-time men's record), Euro 2016 winner, Nations League winner. There's not much left to prove.

Career highlights that defined him

Sporting CP → Man United: Breakout. 3x Premier League, 1x UCL in 2008

Real Madrid: 450 goals in 438 games. 4x UCL. Became the UCL all-time top scorer

Juventus: 2x Serie A titles, carried Portugal to Euro 2016

Man United return + Al-Nassr: Leadership role, global brand push, Saudi league growth

Portugal: 217 caps, Euro 2016, 2x Nations League

What post-retirement could look like

Ronaldo hasn't announced anything official, but based on his interviews and business moves:

Family first: He's said multiple times he wants to be present for his 5 kids

Business: CR7 brand — hotels, gyms, clothing, and his YouTube channel which blew past 60M subs in 2024

Football role: Likely ambassadorial. FIFA, UEFA, and Portugal FA all want him involved. Coaching seems unlikely — he’s said he doesn’t have the patience for it

Ownership: Rumors of buying into a club, possibly in Portugal or US.

The emotional side

For a lot of fans this is "end of an era" stuff. Messi-Ronaldo rivalry defined 15 years of football. 2026 was the last time we’ll see him on the biggest stage. Even in the Spain loss he played 90 minutes, took free kicks, and was still Portugal's main outlet at 41.
