1. Key Dates Announced by IDP

Last Paper-Based IELTS dates in India: July 25, August 6, August 22, 2026

From September 2026: Only computer-based formats available .

 Format: IELTS on Computer

Listening: Computer + Headphones

Reading: Computer

Writing: Computer - typing

Speaking: Face-to-face with examiner

2.  Format: IELTS on Computer (Writing on Paper)

Listening: Computer + Headphones

Reading: Computer

Writing: Paper - handwriting

Speaking: Face-to-face with examiner

Last Paper Dates: July 25, Aug 6, Aug 22, 2026

Fee: INR 19,000 for Academic & General Training

Results: 3-5 days for computer vs 13 days for paper

Speaking: Still in-person for both formats

3. What Stays the Same

IDP confirmed the test itself is unchanged:

Same format: 4 sections - Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking

Same difficulty level, question types, and scoring band 1-9

Same duration: ∼2 hours 45 minutes

Same fee: INR 19,000 for Academic & General Training

Same acceptance: Accepted by universities, employers, and for migration . 

4. Benefits of Computer-Based IELTS

According to IDP and education consultants:

More test dates: Available multiple days a week vs 4 times/month for paper

Faster results: 3-5 calendar days vs 13 days for paper

Better experience: On-screen navigation, timer, highlight text, make notes, easy editing

Listening: Clear audio directly through headphones

Writing: Type directly, copy-paste, word count, edit easily. 

5. Why India is Switching

IDP, the sole administrator of IELTS in India, says the move reflects the global shift to digital assessments. It aligns India with international practices and meets student needs for flexibility. b01e

6. What You Should Do Now

Prefer paper? Book one of the last 3 dates: July 25, Aug 6, Aug 22, 2026

Prefer typing? Choose "IELTS on Computer" from Sept

Prefer writing by hand? Choose "IELTS on Computer (Writing on Paper)" from Sept

Start practicing: Typing speed, reading on screen, using highlight/notes tools. Test centers will give instructions before the exam. 

Important

This only applies to India. Other countries will still offer both paper + computer for now. Also, "IELTS on Computer" has been available in India since 2017 - Sept 2026 just makes it the only option.
