No audio/video on speaker in Chennai Metro .
1. WHAT'S NOT ALLOWED
Under Section 59 of the Metro Railway (Operations and Maintenance) Act 2002, these are treated as "nuisance":
Playing music or videos without headphones
Using mobile phones on speaker mode
Talking loudly on calls
Any act that causes discomfort to fellow passengers .
Basically: If people around you can hear it, it's a violation 7443
2. FINE AMOUNT
Fine: Up to ₹500
Note: Some reports initially mentioned "up to ₹2,500" but CMRL's official advisory and news reports confirm ₹500 max
Extra action: If disruption continues, you can be removed from metro premises by authorized officials .
3. HOW IT WILL BE ENFORCED
Announcements will be played in trains and at stations
Pink Squad, Quick Response Team, and CMRL officials will check during inspections
If they get a complaint or find someone causing nuisance, they will impose the fine m
4. WHY THIS RULE
CMRL said this is to "enhance travel etiquette" and "ensure passenger comfort".
It came after The Hindu reported on "The growing nuisance of reels on loudspeakers in Chennai Metro trains".
Commuters complained about Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, music videos being played on speaker .
5. CMRL'S REQUEST TO PASSENGERS
"Show consideration for fellow passengers"
Simple habits: Use headphones, keep conversations low, avoid speaker mode .
6. OTHER METROS
Bangalore Metro also recorded 57,538 cases of loud music without headphones in 1 year. Delhi Metro has similar rules. .
