The Bankers' Books Evidence Act, 1891 was brought in during British rule.

Back then it only covered paper ledgers and physical bank records. But now we are in the digital era.

Key Highlights of the 2026 Bill

Legal recognition for Digital Records

Bank statements, UPI transactions, online transaction logs, core banking data - all of these can now be submitted as evidence in courts.

Validity of Electronic Records

Printed copies, certified digital copies, and a certificate from a bank officer will be accepted by courts directly. There will be less need to bring bank officials as witnesses.

Aligned with Modern Banking

Covers net banking, mobile banking, fintech, and cooperative banks - all types of modern banking records.

Help in Fraud & Cyber Crime Investigations

Makes it easier to submit digital evidence quickly in cases of bank fraud, money laundering, and cyber crimes.

How it benefits common people?

Court cases will be resolved faster

Delays in obtaining bank records will reduce

Digital transactions will get full legal protection

In Summary

The Bankers' Books Evidence Bill, 2026 will replace the 1891 Act and update banking records laws to match current times. Both paper + digital records will have equal legal value going forward.

After approval in Lok Sabha, it will go to Rajya Sabha and then to the President for assent to become law
