INDIA S FIRST HYDROGEN TRAIN LAUNCHING ON JULY 17 TH 2026
India's First Hydrogen Train - Launch Update
Launch Date: July 17, 2026
Route: Jind - Sonipat section, Haryana - Northern Railway
Train: 10-car hydrogen fuel cell-based trainset
Power: 1,200 KW hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system
Top Speed: 75 kmph
Capacity: ∼2,500 to 2,600 passengers
Why this is big
Zero Emission: Only water vapor comes out. No smoke, no carbon
Made in India: Built at ICF Chennai, retrofitted from DEMU by Medha Servo + Ballard
Infrastructure Ready: India's largest 3,000 kg hydrogen plant at Jind with refuelling facility
Net Zero Goal: Part of Indian Railways' target to be Net Zero by 2030
This makes India one of the few countries - with Germany, Japan, China, US - to run hydrogen trains.
The trial runs including emergency braking and oscillation were already done in June.
What's next?
After Jind-Sonipat, Railways plans 35 more hydrogen trains under "Hydrogen for Heritage" for heritage and hill routes.
