TELECOM SERVICES UPTO MAY 2026 - Vi is back to net adds after months of losses, but growth is tiny vs Airtel/Jio. April 2026 it added 1.33 lakh, May slowed to 1.21 lakh. Still losing rural users to Airtel/Jio. Focus is on 4G upgrade + 5G rollout in select cities.
Reliance Jio – May 2026
Wireless base: 50.14 crore subscribers, 39.27% market share.
May 2026 net adds: +21.54 lakh mobile subscribers, +1.01 lakh fixed-line connections. Total +22.55 lakh.
Broadband subscribers: 52.96 crore, 41.6% market share, 1st in India.
Fixed Wireless Access: 78.4% FWA share, added around 4 lakh AirFiber subs in May.
Wireline: 15.48 million connections, gained 1.01 lakh in May.
VLR active percentage: around 94.77% based on Sept 2025 data. May VLR isn’t out yet, but Jio usually runs 94-95% active.
Rural wireless: Added 2.8 lakh subscribers in May 2026.
Trend: Strong growth across mobile, fixed, and FWA. Added 30.84 lakh in April, 22.55 lakh in May.
Bharti Airtel – May 2026
Wireless base: 48.38 crore subscribers, 37.89% market share.
May 2026 net adds: +29.26 lakh mobile subscribers, +53,809 fixed-line connections. Total +29.8 lakh, led the month.
Broadband subscribers: 37.6 crore, 2nd in India.
Wireline: 11.81 million connections, gained 0.05 lakh in May.
VLR active percentage: around 98.27% based on Sept 2025 data. Highest among operators, usually 98-99% active.
Rural wireless: Added 15.6 lakh subscribers in May 2026, highest rural gains.
Trend: Airtel overtook Jio in May net adds. Added 34.82 lakh in April, 29.8 lakh in May. Strong rural and postpaid push. ok.
Vi – May 2026
Wireless base: 19.86 crore subscribers, 15.56% market share.
May 2026 net adds: +1.21 lakh mobile subscribers.
Broadband subscribers: 12.9 crore, 3rd in India after Jio and Airtel.
VLR active percentage: around 84.58% based on Sept 2025 data. May VLR isn’t published yet, but Vi usually stays near 84-85% active.
Rural wireless: Lost 1.4 lakh subscribers in May 2026.
Trend: Vi is back to small net adds after months of losses. April 2026 it added 1.33 lakh, May slowed to 1.21 lakh. Still losing rural users to Airtel and Jio.
BSNL – May 2026
Wireless base: 9.29 crore subscribers, 7.28% market share.
May 2026 net: -1.05 lakh mobile subscribers, still losing customers.
Broadband subscribers: 2.7 crore, mostly DSL and BharatNet.
Wireline: 7.43 million connections, lost 0.03 lakh in May.
VLR active percentage: around 60.25%, lowest among operators. That means about 40% of BSNL SIMs are inactive.
Rural wireless: Lost 9.4 lakh subscribers in May 2026, the biggest rural churn among operators.
Trend: BSNL keeps losing mobile users due to delayed 4G. Government 4G rollout with TCS is ongoing — 1 lakh sites planned, about 25,000 live as of May. Gaining on wireline and rural broadband via BharatNet, but mobile continues to slide.
