Background

The resignation comes amid nationwide protests by students led by the "Cockroach Janta Party / CJP" over alleged NEET paper leaks in May 2026 and a retest on June 21. Protesters were demanding his resignation + ₹1 crore compensation for families of students who died by suicide. 

Police used tear gas to disperse protesters in Delhi today. Talks between the Centre and CJP had been ongoing, with the government earlier seeking time till Saturday afternoon. 

Government stance earlier

Until yesterday, government sources were saying "no question of Dharmendra Pradhan resigning" and that "resigning and running away from responsibility will be the easiest thing to do". They said the focus was on reforming NTA instead. 

Who is Dharmendra Pradhan

He served as Education Minister from 2021 to 2026. Also previously handled Petroleum, Steel, and Skill Development portfolios.
